It did work, with a lot of effort. My HP2605dn is now fully working on Windows 8.1, including all the features, even a couple I did not have previously on the XP driver.

I worked step-by-step through the instructions as provided -- three times as a vital point is missing.
On one of the panels which come up there is a 'radio button' option for the wizard to query the printer to find the driver type - by default this is on - you MUST turn it off. Then on the next page an extra option appears to use 'Windows Update' - click on this, some time (20 mins plus for me) a new list of supported printers comes up. This includes the 'dn' PS version of the printer. Select this and continue.
After the new driver installation is complete you then have to plow down through the Control Panel / printers etc to correctly set the functions for the printer - by default duplex printing is disabled. There are some other deeply hidden options in there you may also want to change.
But at the end of the day it does work, the nasty default driver is gone and an updated HP one is working. Almost four months!
