Average Life Spans

Each manufacturer claims a different life expectancy for their projector bulb or lamp, but almost all publish this information -- either on the box of the projector, on the bulb or lamp packaging, or in the support documentation on their website. Projector Central, an online trade magazine for projection equipment, suggests that most projector bulbs have a life of about 2,000 hours. Epson claims its PowerLite projector’s lamp lasts 5,000 hours and Delta makes an LED-based projector with a projected life span of about 20,000 hours.

Before You Buy

Consider that the lamp or bulb is often the most expensive part of a projector, and that unless you buy a projector with an extremely long (20,000-plus hour) lifespan you’ll probably have to replace the bulb or lamp at some point. Do some research before buying to see which projector’s bulbs fit within your company’s budget. If you use the projector for two two-hour meetings a week, for example, you may not have to replace the bulb for 10 years.

Choose Citation Style

Pixelation problems? What does that mean? These are DLP projectors, and as such the only pixel issue they should ever exhibit are dead or stuck pixels - but I wouldn't call that 'pixelation'. It sounds to me like people probably aren't running it in the native resolution, which is 1200 x 800.

If you are sending a data signal to projector in anything other than its native resolution, you're going to get an ugly and pixelated image.

Check that first.

As for the lifecycle issue, I suggest you use the menus to audit the amount of hours these units have been used. The optical engine of a DLP projector should last 10,000 hours at least, but an LCD optical engine will likely only last 10,000 hours (tops). Replacement lamp cost and availability is often a determining factor in projector swap-outs, with the other deciding factors being reliability and new features. This makes planning difficult. I suggest a six year max cycle. After that, lamp availability is going to start becoming an issue and power supplies will likely start to fail.

For future purchases:

Don't buy anything with less an XGA resolution if you're stuck on 4:3 aspect ratios, and if widescreen is desired, 1920 x 1080. Stick with DLP if possible, and don't buy anything with less than 3,000 ANSI lumens.
