And HP is out of line not offering older drivers if this printer actually came with them for older OS. If you have the install CD, look on it and see if it says for Win Vista or 7 or whatever.
Because when you go to their site, they can detect your OS and not offer drivers for older Windows versions.
They tell you Windows has them and through Windows Update. However, If you unplug it, uninstall it, restart PC, re install it and this problem occurs, then this is how to get it install in the Windows compatibility the software and drivers were written for.
Now if it fails again, and your CD says it is for another Windows Version
disconnect printer
uninstall, restart pc
Put in CD>>Open CD Folder and find the Setup.exe file.
Follow these instructions and it will install and run just fine.
Now Right click on Setup.exe and select Troubleshoot compatibility.
In the Wizard
select the 2nd (bottom selection)
select this ran on earlier version of windows. (Top Box)
then select in the menu>>(THE OS VERSION ON THE CD)
then select 'TEST'. This will install it.
