It is really surprising that Canon wouldn't help installing its own product. Before going further, I suggest calling them back and asking again. The follow advice is based only on online research: I don't have a Canon imageRunner to test with.

Apparently, the scanner driver is only functional if the device is connected to your computer via USB (rather than networked). Is your printer connected to your computer by USB?

Although the 'Quick Start Manual' for your printer says that the CD includes a scanner driver, for some reason, there is no scanner driver listed on the driver download page for this product. Do you have the CD that came with the printer?

According to your User Guide, the 'scanner driver' actually is a program called 'ScanGear iR.' This may have been installed as part of either the printer driver or the 'iR Toolbox' program. On your computer, click Start and type iR Toolbox into the Search menu: was something found?

You can also see if Windows itself recognizes your scanner. Open Windows Fax and Scan:

  • Click Start, type Windows Fax into the Search box, and press Enter
  • Click the New Scan button
  • Is the scanner recognized or do you get a message than no scanner is installed?
